Reconstructing a rare BMW STW livery through fragmented references, rebuilt logos and exact graphic alignment
For MATS Performance, one of IMAGO’s closest and most trusted clients, every new project deserves something exceptional. This time, that meant recreating K. Mogi’s BMW 320i STW as a faithful one-to-one reproduction of the original race car.
With no complete archive or original design files available, the process required extensive research across scattered photographs and footage from the championship. Images of other cars from the same period became essential for identifying details that were no longer visible on the K. Mogi car itself, while several sponsor logos had to be digitally rebuilt from limited references.
Aligning the BMW chequered pattern
The greatest challenge was rebuilding the red BMW chequered pattern from the 1990s so it connected perfectly across every panel. Its rhythm had to continue over doors, wheel arches and changing body surfaces without visible breaks or distorted transitions. Repeated testing and refinement were essential to making the finished car feel like a true recreation rather than an approximation.

Rebuilt from an incomplete visual archive
Each available image revealed only part of the original design. Details were compared across different cars, events and viewing angles to determine the correct logo forms, proportions and placement. Where no usable artwork remained, the graphics were manually reconstructed to match the original as closely as possible.
